Lip injuries such as lip bruising and swelling are common, especially with sporty people. After all, sudden unwanted impact to the mouth area is among the risks of sporting activities, especially the more physically demanding ones.
The area of the mouth has a lot of blood supply, so it can bleed a lot during an injury. Yet, these areas heal much quicker than other parts. When assessing a lip injury, watch out for signs, like:
- Extreme and uncontrollable bleeding
- Losing a part of the lip
- Swelling and bruising
- Having difficulty when closing the mouth
- Labored breathing
- Severe pain
- Having trouble swallowing
If you notice these signs, it’s better to get the injury checked by a doctor. When a lip injury takes a lot of time to heal, it can cause further complications.
If yours is rather minor, there are home remedies you can try. Still, the injured area should get the proper care it needs until healed. Here are some tips on how to reduce swollen lip caused by a sports injury:
- Wash the injured part with soap and water as soon as possible. Cleaning the area can speed up the healing process since it removes bacteria, debris, and dirt.
- Apply a cold compress to the injured site. This does not only reduce the pain, but also the swelling. Apply ice packs for ten minutes, or until the swelling decreases.
- Rinse the area with a saltwater solution. Salt has antibacterial properties that can be beneficial to fresh wounds. With light pressure, apply the solution with a cotton ball.
- Apply baking soda paste on your lip. Baking soda promotes healing due to its anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. You can wash the paste off with cold water, and apply it again until the pain fades.
- Same with baking soda, turmeric paste works well for injured lips. It contains a compound called curcumin, which speeds up the healing process.
Minor injuries can be treated at home. Specifically, if there’s no sign of infection, home treatments are often more than enough. Ask your doctor’s help if the condition becomes serious though.
